PANORAMA SCHIEDAM
Panorama Schiedam presents the history of the city as a theatrical, immersive exhibition. Instead of traditional display cases or isolated objects, the panorama is constructed as a miniature city in which visitors literally walk through time: from Roman settlements to the twentieth-century neighborhoods of De Gorzen, Nieuwland, and Groenoord. Light, sound, and scale models create a dynamic landscape in which the stories of Schiedam’s inhabitants come to life. The mirrored wall provides both psychological depth and an overview, while the walking routes invite interaction as well as contemplation. Through the collaboration between model makers and sound and lighting designers, the panorama feels more like a performance than a traditional exhibition. Recognizable historical scenes are brought to life with attention to small details, rhythm, and narrative tension. In this way, an experiential space emerges in which history, storytelling, and human experience come together — for both local residents and visitors from beyond the city.
