EXHIBITION
The Groninger Museum holds the largest museum collection of postmodern design in the Netherlands, built up since the 1980s under the direction of former director Frans Haks. In the exhibition Welcome to the Dreamhouse!, every room is filled with postmodern design from the museum’s own collection. Visitors wander, as it were, through a life-sized home. The exhibition features work by influential designers such as Alessandro Mendini and Ettore Sottsass, alongside contributions by Philippe Starck and contemporary designers including Studio Job, Maarten Baas and Jaime Hayon, each of whom reinterprets postmodernism in their own distinctive way.
SCENOGRAPHY
The scenography explores postmodernism both as a visual style and as a cultural attitude: a resistance to fixed values, a blending of high and low culture, and a critical reflection on taste, consumption, and identity. Iconic design is interwoven with waste materials and everyday objects—not as a contrast, but as an essential expression of an era in which recycling, irony, and excess reinforce one another. Postmodernism celebrates freedom, yet also reveals a world adrift: full of nostalgia, but without clear direction. The scenography seeks to translate this ambiguity into an experience that is at once seductive and unsettling.
