Hamlet

To have or not to have, that’s the question. De Toneelmakerij locates Shakespeare’s classic Hamlet in Amsterdam New-West XL 2020, a small ‘Dubai at the Sloterplas shore’, where the excitement of big money is tangible, status is measured by the number of Instagram followers, where the construction pits grow deeper and the penthouses rise higher.

Writer Abdelkader Benali makes a merciless adaptation of Hamlet, about a world where friendships come under pressure, the social safety net is rolled up and everyone is in a free fall. Nothing seems self-evident anymore. Old values have been exchanged for rapid success. Property prevails over identity. Illusions above reality. In other words, ‘fake it until you make it’. Those who cannot participate in this will disappear from the streets.
